What is 13th Tribe ?

13th Tribe is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded by Rabbi Sydney Mintz in 2019.

Rabbi Mintz is a creative renegade in the realm of re-imagining, sharing and celebrating jewish traditions in innovative and vital ways. She has also served as Rabbi of Congregation Emanu-El in San Francisco for over 25 years.

13th Tribe launched its creative projects in 2019 with the one-woman show “You May Think I’m Funny But It’s Not” which premiered to full-houses and standing ovations in San Francisco at the legendary Marsh Theatre.

Since then, 13th Tribe has hosted an instagram show called “Two Jewish Mothers Shoot the S%#*”, a women’s spiritual retreat in Haines, Alaska, Burning Man Shabbat with Big Imagination, The Jewish Names Project, Havdalah in Hapuna & Bolinas and the Floating Sukkah on the Bay in Sausalito.

Why 13th Tribe? The journey of the Jewish people includes many foundational stories. One story says that the Jews originate from the "12 Tribes of Israel" who were the 12 sons of the Patriarch Jacob.

But Jacob also had a daughter named Dinah. She is not included in the story, and does not officially have her own tribe. There are many Jews and Non-Jews like Dinah who feel a calling but have not yet found a portal or community to experience the joy, meaning and creative spirit of Jewish life.
